Breaking the System: Finding Your Role in the Future of Healthcare

When Samantha Monson reached out to me to join a panel at BSW - it was an easy yes. We had known of each other through various conferences though had never actually met; but she showed up with passion, curiosity, and a plan for a panel to challenge assumptions.

Her energy and enthusiasm were infectious, and the panel she created, 𝘉𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮: 𝘍𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘙𝘰𝘭𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦 (BSW May 7th), was ready for a provocative discussion.

Sam, who moderated the panel, has creatively made “hating exercise” (We Hate Exercise) the way to love it - because she is meeting people where they are. Cally Cripps works directly with the community. She understands the real pains people experience, so she can create better tools to improve mental health outcomes. Kevin Gilbert is a technology leader committed to helping innovators create meaningful impact by ensuring the tech solutions are connected to user needs. And Christian Monson brought both the professional and end-user perspectives together to share how technology helped him solve a problem the system couldn’t. I was thrilled to share why the paradigm shift in health care is not a story of failure but a story of hope, and how we all play a role in the paradigm shift.

From different backgrounds and skill sets, this panel challenged the thinking around what healthcare is, what it should be, and how we are all accountable for creating something that works better. The conversation afterwards engaged interesting ideas, great questions, and new insights.

We need everyone in the process. Those funding change, making change visible, working within the system, and building what comes next. The variety of experiences and perspectives across the healthcare ecosystem makes impactful change possible.
